Pathway Development
The development of tumour-specific National Cancer Information Pathways is a central part of the CRS vision for patient information. The Patient Experience Team has been working in partnership with Cancer Networks and Cancer Charities.
National Cancer Information Pathways will help to ensure that accurate and comprehensive core information about cancer is accessible to all patients across England at the point of need. They will enhance the quality of care given to patients with cancer (or suspected cancer) by ensuring that all patients are offered a full and comprehensive catalogue of information, which has been developed both by local mapping activity and national collaborative workshops.
The Cancer Reform Strategy 2007 noted that national cancer tumour-specific Information Pathways should be made available for all tumour types. The National Cancer Action Team, in partnership with Cancer Networks and Cancer Charities, has been working to develop these. To date, eleven National Pathways have been developed.
National Pathways will:
- help to ensure that accurate and comprehensive core information about cancer is accessible to all patients across England at the point of need
- provide all healthcare professionals with a core base of approved information to provide to the patient at key parts of their patient journey
- provide information for cancer patient information prescriptions
- provide patients and carers with NHS-approved materials.
