BME Cancer Voice

Background

Please note, that as of June 2011, the National BME Cancer Patient Advisory Panel is now known as BME Cancer Voice, which incorporates Asian Cancer Voice and Black Cancer Voice.

The National BME Cancer Patient Advisory Panel was set up following the Cancer Reform Strategy (CRS) 2007, which reported that BME groups in general report a worse experience of treatment and care, based on patient experience survey results. The panel was set up to provide patients and carers with an opportunity to voice their experiences of cancer services and change the way that cancer services are delivered in England.

I am delighted to say that NCAT has launched the National BME Cancer Patient Advisory Panel and that we now have our first members. The panel is very important to NCAT as the members are highlighting cancer inequalities based on their own experience as a patient and also identifying possible solutions to the problem. Improving engagement with cancer patients and carers from BME communities is an important part of NCAT's work in delivering the Cancer Reform Strategy ( CRS ).

Being a panel member provides an ideal opportunity for BME patients and their carers to share their experiences with us so that we can provide information which will enable the NHS to work towards improving cancer services for everyone.

Methodology

Members of BME Cancer Voice are invited to participate for as long as they wish, and during the term of their participation will be contacted around three or four times each year. At the point of signing up, members will have indicated how they would prefer to be contacted (whether by telephone or email), and this is the method that will be used.

Each 'wave' of surveys, will concentrate on a different subject matter. An example of this might be: the patient viewpoint on how well they feel they understand their cancer, and how well they feel it was explained to them by NHS staff. Another example might be about their GP facilities.

Each survey will take no longer than 20 minutes to complete, and members will also receive key results via newsletter once everyone's viewpoint has been collected.  BME Cancer Voice aims to accrue over 1000 members so that there is the best chance of representing all major ethnicity groups.

Quatrosystem is the name of the company hosting the panel, conducting the surveys and analysing the findings. Quatrosystem is a group of companies that bring together numerous research and marketing solutions. The company has been conducting research for over 20 years and has particular experience in panel management and patient interviewing. There will be a consistent team managing the project end to end, responsible for maintaining a strong panel base, creating questionnaires and analysing and presenting the findings.

Progress

Since then, NCAT has made a lot of progress. Both the Annual Report of the Cancer Reform Strategy (2008) and the Second Annual Report of the Cancer Reform Strategy (2009) sets out the progress made in implementing the strategy.
